About the Course

Brachytherapy is a form of internal radiation therapy used to treat cancer by placing radioactive sources directly inside or very close to the tumor. Unlike external radiation, which targets the tumor from outside the body, brachytherapy delivers concentrated radiation directly to the affected area. This minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissue. It is commonly used to treat cancers of the prostate, cervix, breast, and skin. Brachytherapy can be used alone or in combination with other treatments like surgery or external radiation. The procedure typically involves inserting radioactive seeds or wires using thin tubes or needles. The treatment duration is relatively short, often requiring just a few days. Side effects are generally localized and may include pain, swelling, or fatigue. One of its main advantages is that it provides a higher dose of radiation while minimizing exposure to healthy tissues. Technological advances have made brachytherapy more precise, enhancing its effectiveness and safety.
