पाठ्यक्रम के बारे में

The catabolism of hemoglobin begins when aged red blood cells are engulfed by macrophages in the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. The hemoglobin molecule is split into heme and globin. The globin portion is broken down into amino acids, which are reused for protein synthesis. The heme group undergoes degradation by heme oxygenase, producing biliverdin, iron, and carbon monoxide. Biliverdin is then reduced to bilirubin, which binds to albumin and is transported to the liver. In the liver, bilirubin is conjugated with glucuronic acid, forming conjugated bilirubin. This form is secreted into bile and enters the intestine, where it is further metabolized by bacteria into urobilinogen. Some urobilinogen is reabsorbed, while the remainder is excreted as stercobilin in feces or urobilin in urine.
