Carcinoma of the larynx refers to cancer that originates in the tissues of the larynx (voice box). It is most commonly squamous cell carcinoma, arising from the epithelial lining. The major risk factors include tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and exposure to certain chemicals. Symptoms often include a persistent hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, a lump in the neck, and breathing difficulties. Early detection through laryngoscopy and biopsy is crucial for effective treatment. Prognosis varies depending on the extent of the cancer and the patient's overall health.
