Protective immunity can be achieved by passive immunization, which is short term and active immunization which is long lasting. Vaccines brings about active immunization. Vaccines are attenuated/killed whole cell microorganisms or their subunits which trigger secondary immune response by virtue of generating memory T and B cells. There are several vaccine strategies with their advantages and limitations. Vaccines are classified into 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation based on use of whole organism, a purified macromolecules or use of genetic material.-
